In the Greek and Roman world, the rose was associated with the myth of Adonis and Aphrodite. The goddess, in love with the young hunter, could do nothing to save him from death by a wild boar attack. In helping her lover, Aphrodite injured herself with brambles and her blood made red roses bloom.

Zeus, moved by the goddess's grief, allows Adonis to live four months in Hades, four in the world of the living, and another four wherever he would have preferred: for this reason the rose is considered a symbol of love that conquers death and also of rebirth.

The rose crowns poets and is linked to convivial events; it is a symbol of triumphant love; it is linked to the mythology of Venus and Adonis, as well as to Cupid, pricked by a thorn. In funeral symbolism, it indicates martyrs and the torments they suffered because of their Faith: Saint Stephen wears a crown of roses in the procession of martyrs to Paradise.

The thorns sprouted after the expulsion from Eden, to remind man of the lost sweetness of Paradise and the Original Sin. Associated with jasmine, it is a symbol of faith; if red, it indicates Charity, if white it represents purity.
