In the Viṣṇupāda temple at Gayā, in the eastern state of Bihar, India, in an octagonal basin, encased in silver, there is an irregular rock surface, with a slight indentation in the centre, perceived as a footprint: the imprint of Viṣṇu's foot: Viṣṇu himself was here and left a tangible trace around which pilgrims gather.

In Hinduism, the divine feet are in many ways focal points of devotion: by bowing reverently and touching the feet of a deity's statue, the devotee enacts a specific type of expressive performance, which tends towards a deeper understanding of the divine imprint.
