The Bodhi tree was an ancient sacred fig (Ficus religion), located within the area where the Mahabodhi Temple stands today, in Bodh Gaya about 100 km from Patna in the Indian state of Bihar.

In fact, it is believed that under this tree Siddhartha, the religious master founder of Buddhism, later known as Buddha, reached bodhi (enlightenment). Finally, according to Buddhist tradition, Siddharta Gautama meditated under this tree, called Ashwattha in the Tripitaka, when he reached nirvana.
