The base of the Lingam is typically circular opeetham (Brahma-Pitha) and contains an elongated bowl-like structure (Vishnu-Pitha) resembling a flat teapot with a spout from which the top has been cut off. A tall cylinder with a rounded head (Shiva-Pitha) also rests inside the bowl.

The Shiva Linga is most often carved in stone. In fact in Shiva temples, they can be quite large, towering over devotees. Many are ultimately decorated with traditional symbols or elaborate carvings, although some are somewhat industrial looking or relatively plain and simple.
