Shiva is one of the most important deities in Hinduism, considered the creator, destroyer of evil and transformer. In Shaivism he is considered the Supreme Being. In classical Hinduism, however, the Supreme Being is constituted by the Trimurti, the Trinity to which Shiva belongs together with Brahma and Vishnu.
His depiction can be the benevolent one of a yogi (ascetic) who lives isolated in the Himalayas, in the company of his wife Parvati and his two sons Ganesha and Kartikeya, or the fearsome one who kills demons.
Parvati, whose name means “daughter of the mountain” is the benevolent goddess of Hinduism. It represents the symbol of fertility, love and devotion, as well as an expression of the energy and creative power ( Shakti ) of Shiva, with which it is almost always depicted.
In her terrifying forms Parvati is known as Durga and Kali. Together with Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and learning, she forms the Tridevi, the trinity of Hindu goddesses.
