The Kāma Sūtra (Sanskrit: कामसूत्र) is in fact an ancient Indian text on human sexual behavior, widely considered to be the most important work in Sanskrit literature on love.

The author is Vatsyayana and the full title is Vātsyāyana Kāma Sūtra ("Aphorisms on love, by Vatsyayana". Furthermore, in classical Hindu culture, the human being has the precise objective of pursuing a harmonious self-realization, without neglecting any aspect of earthly life by seeking four objectives:

• Artha: Wellbeing, both physical and economic;
• Kama: Desire, pleasure and its fruition;
• Dharma: the ethical sense that seeks a balance between artha and kama;
• Mokṣa: liberation from the material world and attainment of true self-consciousness.

Kautilya's Athasastra, a treatise on political art, was written on the artha, while the Manusmirti, i.e. the Code of Manu, was written on the Dharma. Finally, on desire, the famous Kāma Sūtra.
