Batik is a decorative fabric technique known as resist dyeing. Fabrics, preferably white and made of natural animal or plant fibers (cotton and linen), are immersed in a dye bath after the areas that are not to be dyed have been resisted (i.e., covered) with wax melted in a double boiler and then allowed to cool before dyeing.

The process can be repeated several times, resisting other areas and dyeing with progressively darker colors. For this reason, each sarong is unique and can vary in color and intensity due to the artisanal craftsmanship.

Furthermore, this cotton sarong with tribal patterns can also be used as a sarong, which is a large piece of cotton draped around the waist and worn like a skirt by men and women in many parts of Asia.

The fabric is often dyed with bright natural colors, or decorated with various geometric patterns and designs.

How a handmade batik sarong is made: the production stages

1. Wax application
The artisan hand-draws motifs onto the fabric with hot wax, protecting the areas that should retain their original color.

2. Dye bath
The sarong is immersed in the dye: the color penetrates the areas not covered by wax, progressively revealing the batik design.

3. Rinsing and drying
After dyeing, the fabric is rinsed and left to dry in natural light, revealing motifs, shades, and slight artisanal irregularities.

4. Final inspection
Once dry, the sarong is laid out, inspected, and hand-finished, checking for color uniformity, edges, and overall fabric quality.

Hand coloring with natural colors requires an initial hand wash in cold water with vinegar or salt to fix the color. Afterwards, washing in the washing machine with similar colored clothes is fine.
